Phone: 0117 239 1217 Radiator leaks can be one of the most frustrating problems for homeowners, especially in the winter months. A leaky radiator will cause a loss of heat and can lead to a substantial increase in heating costs. The good news is that you might have this problem fixed without calling an expensive plumber. Before you do anything else, make sure that the air pressure is correct on all your radiators and faucets. Air pressure should be between 10 and 15 psi. If it's too low or high, your radiators may fill with water before they get warm enough to release steam into the room. There are several common causes for radiator leaks. Screws in radiator beds and flanges can work themselves out over time. If a screw is just barely starting to back itself out, you might be able to stop the leak by tightening the mounting nut. This may require two pipe wrenches or pliers one on the nut and one holding the screw head from turning. However, if a screw has been loose for some time, you may need to replace it with a longer one. Another option is to wrap pipe tape around the threads of the screws before installing them, then tighten like normal. Teflon tape also works well for this purpose; however, it must be installed at least 24 hours before using heat near that section of the radiator. Salt or mineral deposits left on fittings over time can cause radiators to leak because the water has a tendency to etch into these deposits and start corrosion. One solution is to remove these deposits from the affected areas by brushing them off with steel wool. If they are really stubborn, you may need to scrape them off with an SOS pad or sand cloth for proper cleaning.
