How to tell the type of tap you own
Turn your tap to know which model you own. If the tap only rotates a quarter or a half, then maybe it's ceramic. If you can turn the tap more than half, then it might have a rubber washer.
If you have a single-lever mixer tap, most likely it uses ceramic discs. The disadvantage is that this type of tap normally requires a specific valve replacement ordered from your manufacturer.
Tools to fix a leaky tap
The following items are required to fix a dripping tap:
**An adjustable spanner
***A flathead and Phillips screwdriver
**Scissors
**Replacement cartridge (if you have ceramic discs)
**Assorted washers and O-rings
**WD-40 or similar lubricant
Turn off water supply
Locate the valve and turn it clockwise to temporarily halt flow of water through the system. If you cant find the valve find the stop cock and use it to stop water flowing through the system. Once you have closed the water supply the taps to drain any remaining water in the pipes.
Unscrew the tap
To gain access to components of your tap you have to unscrew it. The screw is usually located underneath the decorative cap on the top of the tap. You may use the flathead screw driver to unscrew the cap or use your hands. Once the cap is free, unscrew the tap. It's possible that the screw will be tight due to a build-up of lime scale. It’s easy to overcome the obstacle by applying a little lubricant or WD-40, giving it 10 minutes to soften the parts.
