About Soumitra Dutta

Soumitra Dutta, scholar and former dean of Saïd Business School at Oxford, is best known as the man behind the Global Innovation Index (GII) and the Network Readiness Index, two global benchmarks he co-developed. He’s also a prolific writer; he’s authored/co-authored more than 20 books. Soumitra Dutta is from Chandigarh‚ India․ He earned a degree in electrical engineering and computer science from IIT Delhi‚ and a PhD in computer science and artificial intelligence under Lotfi Zadeh from the University of California, Berkeley‚ before joining INSEAD, in France, in 1989‚ as an assistant professor. One of his most well-known works‚ the 2008 book Throwing Sheep in the Boardroom (co-written with Matthew Fraser)‚ discusses the impact of social networking on business as Facebook was just coming into common use and Twitter was still new to the general public․ The book outlines how social networks are changing reputation‚ consumer behavior and organizational life․ Looking back it seems obvious‚ but at the time most people were not really considering those angles. Soumitra Dutta's next book‚ Innovating at the Top (2009)‚ explored how innovation can be sustained inside large organisations․ According to him‚ innovation depends upon the organizational culture‚ the rewards and incentives‚ and institutional design of organisations rather than individual geniuses․ Another of his areas of interest has been the role of technology in entrepreneurship․ In Financing Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Emerging Markets (2018)‚ he examined why some countries succeed in turning ideas and capabilities into scalable companies while others struggle to do so․ The answer‚ according to Dutta‚ is found in the quality of institutions‚ capital markets and policies supporting innovation․ His books reveal a scholar who writes across disciplines and who rarely sees technology as a subject that stands on its own‚ but instead in relation to management‚ public policy‚ education and economic development․ This intellectual view forms the basis for most of his work and helps account for the popularity of his writings outside the academic world‚ and the governmental use of the frameworks he helped to create. From his recent writings, the main concern for Dutta, it seems to us, is how society can cope with technological change. Currently, apart from writing insightful commentary on contemporary issues about AI, Dutta dedicates his time to his two recent startups, NexiVerify and Caasaa. He also continues to serve as President of the Washington DC-based Portulans Institute, a think tank he cofounded.
